Design and analysis of piping networks
One of basic activities in engineering and plant
maintenance is determining of fluid flow in piping networks:
- Pipe sizing for newly designed and re-designed
pipe networks
- Calculation of pressure drop in pipes for
existing piping networks
- Calculation of velocity in pipes
- Selection of pumps, fans, control valves and
restriction orifices
- Ensuring that all consumers will get the
demanded amount of utilities for distribution networks
- Ensuring that all nozzles get desired water
flow rate and pressure for fire-protection networks
- Ensuring that the amount of cooling medium for
different parts of the plant will be right
- Ensuring that ventilation of the plant will be
right
The above tasks can be divided by two major
applications:
- General
purpose piping networks
- Fire-protection
networks
PIPENET Standard is a design and analysis
steady state single-phase fluid flow tool for general purpose piping networks.
PIPENET Spray/Sprinkler is a specialized design and analysis steady state
single-phase fluid flow tool for fire-protection networks.
PIPENET Transient is analysis software for
single-phase transient fluid flow software for general and fire-protection
networks, see separate page.
PIPENET is owned and developed by Sunrise Systems, Cambridge, UK. Nor-Par
a.s is exclusive distributor of PIPENET in Scandinavia and East Europe.
See separate page on PIPENET Transient applications
PIPENET Standard
PIPENET Standard lets you:
- Analyze the performance of existing piping
networks or ductworks (for HVAC), especially identify and eliminate problems
leading to poor performance of the network, find pressure drops
- Size new pipes and ducts, select pumps or
fans. size operating valves and restriction orifices for newly designed and
re-designed network
Examples of applications:
- Cooling water systems
- Steam distribution systems
- Process utility distribution systems
- District heating system piping networks
- Heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC)
systems
- Naval piping (shipbuilding), for example
piping systems for tanker ships,
- Natural gas distribution systems
There is no limit on complexity of networks for
which PIPENET Standard may be applied.
Features:
- Extensive library of fittings
and user-defined fittings, using Crane data
- Powerful pipe sizing
capability
- Orifice plates – diameter
to be calculated or specified
- Multiple pump scenarios
- Block/Break of pipes to
simulate closed valves and burst pipes
- Pumps – sizing of pumps or
user-defined vendor’s pump curves
- Pipe schedules – extensive
built-in and userdefined
pipe schedules
- Checking for cavitation,
correction for ambient pressure decrease with height, calculation of
hydraulic gradients and modeling of leaks
- Control valves – pressure, flow,
differential and
set position
- Variable properties and temperatures
- Choice of pipe or node elevations

PIPENET Spray/Sprinkler
PIPENET Spray/Sprinkler is state-of-art
application to design, re-design and analyze the performance of fire-protection
network. It is the leading software of this type in Norway and Denmark (the oil
countries of Nor-Par's sales area):PIPENET Spray
PIPENET Spray/Sprinkler
Module is excellent for hydraulic analysis of
firewater systems in compliance with NFPA13, NFPA15 and NFPA16 rules. This
addresses the hydraulic analysis requirements of virtually all national and
international standards. Ideal for the design of systems used in critical
applications such as offshore platforms, FPSO’s, petrochemical plants, power
plants, refineries, ships, and airport hangars.
Applications
of PIPENET Spray/Sprinkler module:
- Deluge
systems
- Firewater
ringmain systems
- Sprinkler
systems
- Foam
solution systems
- Foam
concentrate systems
- Spray
mist systems
Main features:
- Input – isometric or
orthogonal schematic input,
tabular input including copy and paste from
spreadsheets
- Underlay – import of
drawings for use as
underlays for schematic drawings
- Output – easy,
readable output as tables, or
display of data and results on the schematic
- Choice
of calculation modes – hydraulically most
remote nozzle, inlet pressure/flowrate
- Orifice
plates – diameter to be calculated
or specified
- Multiple
pump scenarios
- Multiple
fire scenarios
- Block/Break
of pipes to simulate closed valves
and burst pipes
- Pumps
– sizing of pumps or user-defined vendor’s pump curves
- Pipe
schedules – built-in and user-defined pipe schedules, lined pipes,
multiple pipe schedules in
one system
- Overboard
dump and minimum flow valves
- User
defined libraries of pipe schedules, nozzles,
deluge valves and linings
- Choice
of Hazen-Williams and Darcy-Weisbach
equations
- Choice
of pipe or node elevations
Steady state design of fire-protection piping
networks may be followed up by a dynamic performance analysis under transient
fluid flow conditions, see PIPENET Transient
